guidelines to help you stay safe online
if you are buying something online, try to buy locally - so that you can view the goods before paying for them. if you do make a purchase from a seller that is
never pay in advance for your purchase.
be careful of accepting items that are underpriced - (if it looks too good to be true, it probably is)
don't let the seller put you under pressure to make a snap decision
be aware that there are 'knock off's' out there - it is illegal to buy forgeries or copyrighted material (dvd movies and cd's)
always request a signed invoice/receipt from the seller ask them to include their name and contact details on the receipt. this will act as proof of purchase
always get a landline number from the seller, (e.g. work or home phone)
payment for goods
use cash or bank draft for payment of goods.
when paying for goods - meet with the seller in person and exchange goods for payment at that time.
never use western union or other money transfer services (once the money has been sent it is gone - you can't retrieve it)
buying a motor vehicle
when buying a motor vehicle make sure you check whether the vehicle is encumbered by any outstanding loans, failure to check this could result in you having the car repossessed when the seller defaults on the loan. (check with your legal advisor if in doubt)
